Walney - March 2009

A local paddle, just another afternoon at Walney...

...and Piel's answer to Eilean Donan.

Planning for a short day on the water around Piel and South Walney, being on springs, I'd hoped for a bit of a surf in the channel. With the tide having turned by the time we arrived, now flowing with the wind and flattening the water, we crossed directly to Piel island and on to meet the locals...

...whilst keeping an eye on the channel for other less playful passers by...

Having rounded Haws point at a rapid rate of knots, here suddenly was a mini Mawr...not quite Penrhyn, but not bad for a few surfs before the waves dropped off...
...and then, with the low March sun lighting the shingle bars and oyster catchers calling, a short crossing back to Roa Island and home...
...just another afternoon at Walney.
