Buckden Pike

A wild day in the Dales on Buckden Pike, where conditions on this 2,302ft summit were more akin to those one might expect to experience on Cairngorm mountains nearly twice the height.
A gentle start from the village of Buckden, the origins of whose name can be found on the sign above the door of The Buck Inn, the village reputedly the home of the Foresters of Langstothdale Chase in medieval times.
Poles: a boon in the deep, soft snow, drifting in places to more than 5ft.
Leaving the more sheltered slopes...
...for something altogether different with winds gusting to 60mph.
A brief stop (battering) for the obligatory summit photo...
...before descending in dramatic conditions.
The valley floor emerges from the driving, stinging snow...
..illustrating clearly just how quickly the deep drifts hereabouts can build.
