Surf's Up!

After spending the afternoon with Mike at 'the factory', sorting out a few things for the new boat now under construction - and having managed to pitch the tent despite the gales - there followed an entertaining evening in the pub.
As Jim explained to the barmaid, we hadn't meant to go there, we just got blown that way; of course that meant it was headwinds all the way back, but with the promise of Jim's mulled wine fortified by an undisclosed quantity of spiced rum, we made quick progress.
Keen to try the Rockpool Alaw, (although with his black dry suit and red helmet, I think it had as much to with colour co-ordination as anything else) Brian takes the demo boat for a ride...
...or perhaps more accurately: was taken for a ride in the demo Alaw.
My turn: waiting to break out...
...and I managed a few good runs, although most ended in out of control bongo's.
Perhaps it was the mulled wine (for mulled wine see: rum), but after a couple of wild rides and subsequent trashings, I found myself spending more time taking photo's than surfing.
The wind had dropped to a manageable F5 by this time but the sea was still wild with the power of the previous night's storm and breaking out was tricky at times.
Dave, having left Bluto at home following last week's beating, prepares to take another...
...as Brian, back in the Alaw, waits to make his run.
Beyond the bay bigger swells are smashing against the reefs...
...those that roll through giving superb clean waves.
Dave breaks out again for a last run...
...cutting through the smaller breakers...
...but it's tiring stuff and as ever, always best to quit while you're ahead.
