Up the creek...

The Ravenglass estuary remains a favourite haunt, especially on wild days when the contrast between the open coast and tree lined banks upstream could not be more complete.
A long way 'up the creek', but not without a paddle. The furthest I have been in fact - against the flow in the shallows it was necessary to drag the boats in two places though there was just enough water to clear the same stretches heading downstream.
Chris - still testing the Orca Inner, and getting a chance to see how it performed in some lumpy conditions off shore. The surf was all over the place though just inside the channel there were some long clean waves which gave a few good surfs.
Wild skies above the wide sands...
...on which we landed briefly...
...before heading back in with the flooding tide.
Sheltered from the fresh winds on the outside, a tranquil spot, favoured by the herons.
We saw no less than 9 birds in the air simultaneously at one point.
A tight channel further upstream...
...and our high point on the River Esk.
It remains an unfulfilled ambition to paddle the Esk from source to sea - with a few portages to avoid some unpleasant drops a long way upstream from here - one for the autumn perhaps.
