Call of the Curlew

From Dale Head, it is a short run up onto the ridge that stretches between the summit of Pen-y-Ghent and Plover Hill - a quick fix when there is no time for the fells.
A familiar view from Fawcett Moor towards Ingleborough and Wernside, just before the steep pull up to the ridge.
The weather closed in for a time, savage gusts tearing across the ridge as I dropped into the saddle and then climbed steadily to the flat ground of Plover Hill. It is an unremarkable summit, the moorland dropping gently on all sides before steepening, unseen, to Foxup and the River Skirfare.
Back on the top of Pen-y-ghent the wind eased as dusk fell. Beneath the crags I heard the unmistakable call of the curlew - earlier than I can remember and the first on the moors this year.
